Ellie’s Sparkle Crack

Crack is right… yes; it’s not a typo. Often when I make it and people ask, “what is it called”; they get a weird expression on their face and ask me to repeat what I just said… “Yes, Sparkle Crack”. After you have had a handful, you will understand why it’s called crack – it is highly addictive.

Anyway… now that we have the name established, allow me to tell you the history of Sparkle Crack. It was December 2016 and my sister and I were doing our Christmas Season tradition (PS. I know what Christmas really is about and celebrate in that spirit too).

Back to our tradition … we watch Harry Potter films back-to-back over a few days. While we were taking a comfort break, my sister said she felt like something “nice” – possibly because of all the feasting that happens at Hogwarts. So, on a whim, I melted chocolate and marshmallows, chucked it over stale popcorn and popped it into the fridge.  Then, I chucked “nice” toppings on (whatever we had in the house) and so crude Sparkle Crack was born. We couldn’t stop eating it while we were “pottering”. Since then, Sparkle Crack has become an art form of addiction and eventually led to its “kissing cousin” – Pretzel Sparkle Crack.

Have fun with this one – play around, adjust and change. See the “boo-boo proof” version of the recipe below; for the “blah-blah-hurry-up” version keep scrolling straight to the sparkle bottom.

This is the Boo-Boo Proof Version of the Recipe:

 8 – 10 Marshmallows

 ¼ Cup Butter

1 Slab of Filled Chocolate –Caramel/Cookies and Cream

 1 Slab of Dark Chocolate

 1 Slab of Milk Chocolate

 Dash of Brandy (Optional)

1½ Packets of Popped Microwave Popcorn (Salted Works Best)

 White Chocolate

Sprinkles (Anything – Edible Glitter, Choc Sprinkles, Smarties, Grated Crunchies)

1) Follow the microwave popcorn package instructions to make (usually 02:10 in microwave) or air pop the popcorn. You can also use stale popcorn. Pour it into a glass rectangular ovenproof dish (33 X 20 cm) and place in oven that is set to 50° C – it just makes it crispier. In the meanwhile, melt the chocolate.

2) Set the white chocolate aside, until the end. Take the rest of the chocolate and break it all up into a microwave-safe bowl and melt it for 60 seconds – take out and stir. If there are still a few pieces of un-melted chocolate, place it back in the microwave for ten seconds; remove and stir. Keep doing this at an interval – until the chocolate is melted. Be patient with the chocolate or it might “burn on you” Image result for smiley black and white . And that is the same disappointment level as cutting into an avo and finding it’s still unripe.

3)  While you are multi-tasking… in a medium saucepan and on a medium heat, melt the butter and marshmallows together, with the dash of brandy (optional). I have used coconut marshmallows before and once I didn’t have marshmallows… but normal marshmallows work just dandy.

4) Once melted and gooey, pour the chocolate in the saucepan, and combine the chocolate gooey concoction. From time to time it seizes. But don’t worry – once you pour it over the popcorn and mix it …all evidence of seizing ceases. Follow the Sparkle Belly Corner Top Tip if needs be…

Top Tip: If chocolate seizes – either add more brandy (and wait until it cooks off) or give a flying fudge and ignore it. It makes no difference in the end –  so carpe diem and all.

5) Remove the popcorn from the oven. Pour the chocolate gooey concoction over the popcorn.   Then combine until all or most of the popcorn has some choc-mallow all over it. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge.

6)  Once cooled, the really fun bit starts! Grate the white chocolate over the popcorn chocolate and add sprinkles and/or smarties – make it look sparkly and yum.

7) Enjoy within one week of making (not that this is ever a problem).

Ellie’s Sparkle Crack (“Blah-blah-hurry-up” Version)

 8 – 10 Marshmallows

 ¼ Cup Butter

1 Slab of Filled Chocolate –Caramel/Cookies and Cream

 1 Slab of Dark Chocolate

 1 Slab of Milk Chocolate

 Dash of Brandy (Optional)

1½ Packets of Popped Microwave Popcorn (Salted Works Best)

 White Chocolate

Sprinkles (Anything – Edible Glitter, Choc Sprinkles, Smarties, Grated Crunchies)

How to Make the Crack:

Follow the microwave popcorn package instructions to make or air pop the popcorn. Pour it into a rectangular ovenproof dish (33 X 20 cm) and place in oven that is set to 50° C; while you do the rest.

Break all the chocolate up (except the white chocolate) and place it in a microwave-safe bowl and melt it for 60 seconds – take out and stir. If not melted completely, return to the microwave for ten second interval(s); take out and stir until melted. Be careful not to burn it.

In a medium saucepan and on a medium heat, melt the butter and marshmallows together, with the dash of brandy (optional). Once melted and gooey, pour the chocolate in the saucepan, and combine the chocolate gooey concoction.

Remove popcorn from the oven. Pour the choc-mallow (chocolate gooey concoction) over the popcorn.   Then mix until all or most of the popcorn has some choc-mallow on it. Cover with cling film and place in the fridge.

Once cooled – grate white chocolate over and add sprinkles – make it look sparkle beautiful and enjoy.
